[Origin] Chinese Magnoliavine Fruit is the dried ripe fruit of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Barll. or Schisandra sphenanthera Rehd. et Wils. (Fam. Magnoliaceae). The former is known as BeiWuweizi (Northern Magnoliavine Fruit) and the latter is known as Nan Wuweizi (Southern Magnoliavine Fruit). The drug is collected in autumn when ripedried in the sun or after steamed, removed from stalk and foreign matter.[Action]To arrest discharges, replenish qi, promote fluid secretion, tonify the kidney, and induce sedation.[Indications]Chronic cough and asthma; nocturnal emission, spermatorrhea; enuresis, frequent urination; protracted diarrhea; spontaneous sweating, night sweating; impairment of body fluid with thirst, shortness of breath and feeble pulse; diabetes caused by internal heat; palpitation and insomnia.1. It is usually prescribed for patients with persistent cough and asthma of insufficiency type.2. It is used in the treatment of spermatorrhoea, protracted diarrhea, enuresis and frequent micturition. It is also prescribed for patients with diarrhea before dawn due to cold of insufficiency type of the spleen and kidney.3. It is used in the treatment of spontaneous perspiration, night sweat, thirst due to impairment of body fluid, palpitation and insomnia.
